FAQs

Why hire a Postpartum Doula?

  • By offering nonjudgmental support, it has been proven that having a Postpartum Doula will reduce postpartum mood disorders and improve breastfeeding success.

What is the difference between a Postpartum Doula and a nanny?

  • The simple answer is that a nanny is there for the baby. A Postpartum Doula is there to support the whole family with extra training in all things you might encounter in the 4th trimester.

What is the difference between a Postpartum Doula and a night nurse?

  • A night nurse is also there to support the family but will focus more attention on the baby. The major difference is a night nurse is often called upon when the baby is medically fragile. If you are hiring a Postpartum Doula who also happens to be an RN, they will not be acting in both roles. They will be acting in the role in which they were hired.

How many hours should a Postpartum Doula work?

  • This varies by family. I have a minimum shift of 4 hours. This allows me to support the nursing parent through a feeding, prepare a meal for the new family and allow both parents to exercise self care by taking a shower and nap.

  • I have a minimum contract of 60 hours. This is still not enough time to give you all off the information I have tucked away in my mind. It is a good start.

How long would I hire a Postpartum Doula for?

  • This also varies by family. The first 2 weeks are the most challenging so I recommend no less than 4 weeks and up to 3 months.

What should I ask a Postpartum Doula when interviewing?

  • What training have you had?

  • Are you certified with a Doula organization?

  • Are you CPR certified?

  • Are you fully vaccinated?

  • Can you share your experience as a doula?

  • What different types of services do you offer?

  • May I call you with postpartum questions/concerns before the birth?

  • When do your services begin after birth?

  • What is your experience in breastfeeding support?

  • What is your experience with postpartum mood disorders?

  • May I call you with questions after our contract ends?
